The Ram 1500 REV, Ram’s first electric pickup, was expected to offer both a standard and long-range version. The standard option will offer an estimated 350 miles of range, while the long-range version promised 500 miles. However, Ram has made the decision to cancel the 500-mile long-range truck and instead is having a larger focus on the Ramcharger. Let’s break down why this decision was made, what the Ramcharger has to offer, and what this means for the EV market.

Why Did Ram Cancel the Long-Range Version of the 1500 REV?

This decision comes at a time when the electric vehicle market is evolving, and demand may be shifting. With the new focus on the Ramcharger, Ram seems to be focusing on delivering a more practical option that can even better address range anxiety and meet the needs of a broader audience.

The Ramcharger will be a plug-in hybrid pick-up truck that won’t have to rely as heavily on charging on the go. This reduces worries with consumers on how far they can go on a single charge, and how long it will take to charge up. This truck combines great performance with impressive range. Let’s get into the details.

This truck will have a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine along with a 92-kilowatt battery and 130-kilowatt generator. With a full charge and a full tank of gas, you’ll get a whopping 690 miles! The electric-only range is about 145 miles, with gas taking over after that. This means that you’ll be set on your daily commute to work and will only have to fill up on long trips. In this truck, you’ll also see 663 horsepower, 615 lb-ft of torque, and 14,000 pounds towing capacity.

What Does This Mean for the Electric Pickup Market?

Ram’s cancellation of the long-range 1500 REV is part of a broader trend. Many automakers are reevaluating the demand for electric vehicles. Although we’re certainly heading that way in the future, widespread adoption may not come as quickly as we thought. There are still many concerns with range and the availability of fast-charging stations in accessible locations. However, with the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ram still needs to be competitive with EVs. That’s where they hope the Ramcharger will be a more valuable and appealing option for consumers.

Overall, although Ram cancelled it’s long-range REV, its commitment to the standard REV and Ramcharger show that the brand is being thoughtful about meeting the needs of the consumers. The standard version of the Ram 1500 REV will have a 168-kilowatt battery and 350 miles of range. The Ramcharger could play a huge role in the market, offering great range for electric-only, but an unheard of 690-mile range on a full charge and tank. The estimated release for the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is late 2025. If you want to stay up to date, contact Jeff Belzer’s Ram in Lakeville, Roseville, and New Prague, MN.
