You have several options if you’re in the market for a full-size pickup truck. Two top picks are the 2022 Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500. Each has the towing capacity to get your work trailer to the job site or haul your boat or camper for a weekend getaway, so how do you know which is the best fit for you? Let’s compare the 2022 Ram 1500 versus the Chevy Silverado 1500 to help you decide.

Trims Available

When comparing available trim levels, the 2022 Chevy Silverado has more options available, while the 2022 Ram 1500 has more to offer at each of the various trim levels. Let’s compare the standard features of these two full-size trucks:

2022 Ram 1500 Trims

The 2022 Ram 1500 is available in seven main trims: Tradesman, Big Horn (Lone Star in Texas), Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited, and TRX. The Tradesman features black bumpers and door handles, automatic headlights, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, and 18-inch steel wheels. The Big Horn trades the wheels for 18-inch aluminum wheels and adds fog lights, body-colored door handles, and chrome bumpers. Moving up to the Rebel gives you a more aggressive exterior style, power-sliding rear window, all-terrain tires, and LED exterior lighting.

You get LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, a power-sliding rear window, and added exterior chrome on the Laramie. The Limited Longhorn gets you rain-sensing windshield wipers, side steps, a spray-in bedliner, power tailgate release, upgraded LED headlights with automatic high beams, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. On the Limited, you also get power-deployable running boards and four-corner air suspensions that can raise or lower the truck’s height.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trims

Nine trims are available for the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500: Work Truck (WT), Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ, and High Country. The WT rolls down the road on 17-inch steel wheels and features a locking tailgate. The Custom adds body-colored trim and ups the wheels to 20-inch aluminum wheels. On the Custom Trail Boss, you get underbody skid plates and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. The LT has 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim, and LED headlights.

You get a body-colored exterior trim, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and LED fog lights and taillights on the RST. The LT Trail Boss features LED headlights and fog lights, while the ZR2 has upgraded skid plates and 33-inch all-terrain tires. Moving up to the LTZ adds an auto-dimming driver’s side exterior mirror, a power tailgate, a power-sliding rear window, power-folding mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Finally, the High Country gets you a spray-in bedliner, running board side assist steps, and enhanced LED headlights.

Power and Performance

The base engine of these vehicles is similar, but when you compare the V-8 engine options, the 2022 Ram 1500 blows the 2022 Chevy Silverado out of the water with available horsepower and torque. Power and performance can be deciding factors when purchasing a truck because they’re often directly associated with towing capacity. Let’s look at what these trucks have to offer for engines and towing capabilities:

2022 Ram 1500 Performance

Regarding a truck, most drivers are interested in engines, towing capacity, and payload. The 2022 Ram 1500 features four engine options:

  • 3.6-liter V-6 with eTorque that generates 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque.
  • 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with or without eTorque that delivers 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
  • 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine that generates 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.
  • 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 that garners 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque (available only on the TRX trim).

The towing capacity of the 2022 Ram 1500 depends on trim level, engine, transmission, cab/box, and drivetrain, with over 200 configurations possible. You get a maximum towing capacity between 6,120 and 12,750 pounds and a payload maximum between 1,310 and 2,300 pounds.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Performance

You also have your choice of four engines on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500:

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
  • 5.3-liter V-8 that delivers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
  • 6.2-liter V-8 that garners 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
  • 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Once again, the towing and payload capacities depend on the trim and engine, with the Silverado hauling between 8,900 and 13,300 pounds with the Max Trailering package. The payload capacity for the Silverado 1500 ranges from 1,690 to 2,280 pounds.

Interior Design

Interior design is where the 2022 Ram 1500 shines, with many standard features on the base level Tradesman that you won’t find on Chevy’s base Work Truck model. Let’s look at what you get inside each of these trucks for standard features on the base trims:

2022 Ram 1500 Interior

Slide behind the wheel of the 2022 Ram 1500 to discover an interior made for comfort and convenience. The Tradesman features power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a clean air interior filtration system, six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 5-inch touch-screen infotainment system.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 features an interior designed for form and function. The WT has manual windows and door locks, two USB ports, air conditioning, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

While these trucks are very similar in many ways, the 2022 Ram 1500 offers an uncommonly smooth drive, especially for pickup trucks, pushing it over the top in this comparison. The interior is also slightly more upscale than the Silverado, offering you more features at lower trim levels.
